Alexa ranking – infographic showing how to improve it
Alexa ranking. An important measure for potential advertisers
If you are like me you probably want to improve your Alexa ranking as it’s a good way of showing you, potential advertisers and guest bloggers how your blog compares to the competition. Plus you get a warm glow when you finally break through the 100,000 mark!
With Alexa you have to be ‘in it to win it’ so you will need to register your site with them. This means that not every website is included in their ranking. There are currently only 30 million sites listed! So it’s not a totally accurate tool, but it’s a very good guide so I encourage you to register your site and get the badges. Check out the widget down on the bottom of the right hand sidebar. It helps with your search engine optimisation (SEO) and they get over 6 million visitors a month.
Apart from giving you useful analytics for your site Alexa also provides tools to improve your SEO and you can pay a premium to get blog or website optimisation. It helps to get a few people to review your site as that impacts on your ranking. Persuading some of your raving fans shouldn’t be that difficult although they do have to sign up to Alexa which may be a potential objection. Explain to them of the benefits of doing it for their site and you should be OK.
Here is a handy infographic to show you how to improve your Alexa ranking. I have followed this advice with my clients’ blogs and they have all improved their ranking within a few weeks dramatically. Plus one of them is edging closer to the magic 100,000 mark.
I’ll keep you updated about the progress for www.workfromhomewisdom.com. We are looking to reach that Alexa ranking target before the end of the year.

How to improve your Alexa ranking – great infographic c/o @MichelleShaeffr http://t.co/IzrsazNa Thanks for sharing this Michelle

Hi Andy,
Personally – Alexa has lost a lot of its value over the past recent months. But webmaster are easy to forget that there are a lot of affiliate networks and other sharing sites (bookmarking and social alike) that still uses Alexa as an indication of value to a website. This is important to remember if you tend to get the maximum exposure over all networks form your SEO and or Marketing strategy.

Crumbs, Andy – this is the first I’ve heard of Alexa! I’ve added it to my ‘research list’ to look into in a bit more detail. There I was thinking that I was cracking this blogging lark – guess that means putting my social media ‘L’ plates back on!!

Hi Kay
This isn’t social media – it’s SEO! Altogether a different animal & a whole new ball game. Good news is that you only have to do it once so not as time sucking as social media can be.
Thanks for dropping in
Best wishes

What a small world – I found you via Michelle’s site, only to discover that you are jelly Judy’s partner – and we natter on Twitter now and then!!
Great post – I use Alexa as my secret weapon as a BS detector! i.e. when someone claims to be the bees knees on an online topic I check out their Alexa score – if they’re up in the many millions you know straight away that they aren’t really much cop with online strategies! As you say, it’s not the definitive guide, but it does give a good rough indicator.
Love the name of your site by the way – very British humour
cheers

Hi Tanya
Thanks for dropping in. Which Michelle are you talking about? I know a few
Yes it’s a small world and you never know who you are connected with. I agree Alexa can split the wheat from the chaff – I’m still working on improving mine – need to write more often to pick up the pace.
The name was from a client who told friends that she was ‘going to see a man about a blog’ when she came for coaching. Glad you like it.
Pop back again sometime
Best wishes

Hi Andy,
I appreciate putting all the steps about improving alexa ranking in just one picture. It makes sense at all. It’s a very great infographic.

I could understand everything with this picture alone. Thank you for sharing your great insights and I just love your infographic.

You know when they say that a picture is worth 1000 words? that’s the moment. thanks!

Bookmarked! First task, build website, later task, Alexa!
I don’t have too much idea what it’s about, so very pleased I can just refer to your post when I need to. Much appreciated. It’ll save me a lot of googling.

Always something new to learn Rosie – have recently been adding websites to directories and been working on Judy’s site to make it more readable. Would love to get a review on Alexa from someone so if you have a moment or two you can leave a review by clicking the Alexa button on the sidebar at the bottom of both our blogs.
Let us know when you have built your website – what are you going to use? WordPress perhaps
Aug 10, 2012 @ 10:32:56
Well, I would but I need to create an account or log in with Facebook, neither of which I am inclined to do. Why do they force account creation/log ins to comment or leave reviews!
My website is a live work in progress (link below if your comment luv is working), and yes, self-hosted WordPress. I’m planning my next year’s blogs at the moment.
Aug 10, 2012 @ 11:15:06
I hate it when they do that too – forcing you to leave a trail behind so they can catch up with you later!
The link to your new website/blog is under your name above. Just had a quick sneak preview – looking good so far. Genesis is an excellent theme.
Once you get some posts going and your RSS feed up and running you can comment here and leave a link to one of your recent posts.
Remember to use the http:// before your website link so that it connects to CommentLuv.

Hi Terry thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment – I’ve had a quick look and your site is showing both Global and Country rank via my Alexa tool bar. Usually you need to get above a certain ranking globally before the country one shows on Alexa. From memory probably above 10 million globally will get a country rank showing but don’t quote me on that as it is only a guess – I could be a few million out

Alexa ranking is accurate only for sites with ranks under 100000. From my experience, best method to increase alexa ranking is by adding Alexa Traffic Widget to EVERY page in your site.
By adding Alexa Traffic Widget to every page, Alexa can pick all the page hits to your web site.
Oct 30, 2012 @ 14:43:29
That’s very true Vivian. It’s not an exact science and you need to reach under 100k to get more useful information on which to base decisions. Thanks for the useful tip on adding it to each page.
Oct 31, 2012 @ 11:51:23
I do many of these steps but the biggest thing seems to be time. I need my sites to have a lot of visitors to lower my rankings. And visitors usually take time to get.
